Together Heverlee woods, Meerdaal forest and Egenhoven woods form the largest mixed deciduous woods in Flanders, and cover an area of 2,050 ha.
In contrast to the surrounding fields, the soil tends to be sandy or loam sand.
The predominant tree species is the red American oak.
There is a great variety in vegetation including ground ivy, Solomon’s seal, celandines, arum lily, wild strawberry, lily of the valley, May lily, lady fern and woodland germander.
The deer population is the oldest in Flanders, and bird watchers will love the wide range of song birds and birds of prey.
Our youngest visitors can enjoy these woods to the fullest thanks to the special play areas, filled with ropes, tree stump animals, climbing poles, a game of giant mikado and puzzle trees.
Dogs can run around off the lead in the special 6 ha zone at the Speelberg.
Don’t miss the mysterious and enchanting tree sculptures on the 'Pad van Ad’ (Ad’s path).
