  • Together Heverlee woods, Meerdaal forest and Egenhoven woods form the largest mixed deciduous woods in Flanders, and cover an area of 2,050 ha.
  • In contrast to the surrounding fields, the soil tends to be sandy or loam sand.
  • The predominant tree species is the red American oak.
  • There is a great variety in vegetation including ground ivy, Solomon’s seal, celandines, arum lily, wild strawberry, lily of the valley, May lily, lady fern and woodland germander.
  • The deer population is the oldest in Flanders, and bird watchers will love the wide range of song birds and birds of prey.
  • Our youngest visitors can enjoy these woods to the fullest thanks to the special play areas, filled with ropes, tree stump animals, climbing poles, a game of giant mikado and puzzle trees.
  • Dogs can run around off the lead in the special 6 ha zone at the Speelberg.
  • Don’t miss the mysterious and enchanting tree sculptures on the 'Pad van Ad’ (Ad’s path).
