Flemish Brabant, regions and capital city
The lovely art city of Leuven and notable regions of the Green Belt and Hageland call Flemish Brabant home.
Hageland, walking country
To the east of Leuven is the magnificent Hageland. Six pleasant provincial towns make up the jewels in the crown of rural area. Here the farmer atop his tractor will wave to you as you walk by and you can explore a network of interconnecting bicycle paths, passing courtyard farms and Roman "tumuli". Horst Castle, proudly standing guard in the middle of a lake, is on the same network. And the children? They are already splashing around in the open-air swimming pool of the provincial areas in Kessel-Lo and Diest. Or is nature more your cup of tea? In Zoutleeuw, the natural habitat is mirrored in Het Vinne lake. A unique ecological creation!
The Green Belt, parks and gardens
The Green Belt encircles the Belgian and Flemish capital of Brussels. There are dozens of splendid parks and gardens thriving in the metropolis. It was here that Brueghel set up his painter's easel and it was here that, many years ago, the Brabant draught horse began its international career. You will be served generous glasses of locally brewed Lambiek, Geuze, Palm or Primus beer in the many bars and outdoor cafes.
The Green Belt consists of three regions: the Pajottenland and Zenne Valley, the Brabant Kouters and the Dijleland. They each have their individual characteristics, which means there are plenty of things to discover!
Leuven, art city
Scarcely twenty minutes by train from Brussels lies a centuries-old city that is more alive than ever: Leuven. A town with Oxfordian airs but a Burgundian heart; one truly unique among the cities of Europe. Leuven combines hard work with playfulness, old with new, art with kitsch, tradition with high tech, energy with savoir-vivre. Leuven, gateway to the Hageland and the Green Belt, will astonish you and will have a special place in your heart before you even know it.
